After his baptism, Pa Akindayomi immersed himself in his newfound faith, seeking to understand the depths of Christian doctrine and the workings of the Holy Spirit. He joined the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, a popular African-initiated church known for its emphasis on spiritual healing and prophetic revelations. Pa Akindayomi’s dedication to prayer and fasting quickly set him apart within the congregation. He was soon recognized as a prophet with the gift of healing and discernment.
Despite his growing influence within the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Pa Akindayomi felt a divine urging that there was more to his calling. In the 1940s, after a series of revelations and divine encounters, he believed God was instructing him to start a new ministry that would be rooted in the teachings of the Bible and guided by the Holy Spirit. This led to the establishment of a prayer group, which would later evolve into the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
The Birth of the Redeemed Christian Church of God
In 1952, Pa Akindayomi founded the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Lagos, Nigeria. The church started humbly, with a small congregation that met in a makeshift structure. At that time, Pastor Adeboye was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos and had only recently joined the RCCG.
Pa Akindayomi’s decision to appoint Pastor Adeboye as his successor was met with surprise by many within the church, but he was unwavering in his conviction. He mentored Pastor Adeboye closely, ensuring that he was well-prepared to take over the leadership of the church. On November 2, 1980, Pa Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi transitioned to glory, leaving behind a church that was spiritually grounded and poised for exponential growth.
After Pa Akindayomi’s death, Pastor Adeboye took over as the General Overseer of the RCCG. Under his leadership, the church has expanded globally, with millions of members and thousands of parishes in almost every country in the world. The RCCG’s growth is often attributed to the solid spiritual foundation laid by Pa Akindayomi and his unwavering commitment to holiness, prayer, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
